Lakers drop first game of CCHA playoffs
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Lake Superior State cut the deficit in half with a third-period rally before losing 5-2 to Michigan Friday in Game 1 of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association First-Round Playoffs.
After 40 minutes of play the Lakers (15-16-5) trailed 2-0. Michigan's A.J. Treais and David Wohlberg notched goals.
Just 37 seconds into the third period, Matt Rust scored an unassisted goal for Michigan (19-17-1), making it 3-0. LSSU answered at 3:58 with an unassisted goal from senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (4-11--15).
Michigan took a 4-1 lead at 4:16 on a goal by Brian Lebler. The Lakers' second goal was netted by junior defender Dillin Stonehouse (3-4--7) and assisted by Dan Barczuk (2-1--3) and sophomore Kyle Pobur. It was Pobur's first point of the season.
Michigan's last goal was a empty-net goal at 18:56 from Chris Summers.
LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped at total of 38 shots, while the Wolverines' Shawn Hunwick stopped 21.
The Lakers were 0-for-3 on the power-play. Michigan was 1-for-5. U-M linemates David Wohlberg, Louie Caporusso and Luke Glendenning all netted two points each.
The Wolverines and Lakers face off Saturday at 7:35 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.
Junior forwards Rick Schofield, Will Acton and Chad Nehring were out of the lineup due to illnes. Michigan's No. 1 goaltender, Bryan Hogan, sat out due to an injury suffered during the previous series against Notre Dame.
