Lakers fall to Minnesota-Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. - Lake Superior State dropped its first game of the Superior Cup to Minnesota-Duluth, 4-3, Friday night.
Minnesota-Duluth (1-0-0) scored first with a power-play goal at the 8:53 mark of the first period. UM-D made the score 2-0 at 10:13 of the first with another power play goal. Lakers junior forward Chad Nehring scored at 16:19, with junior forward Simon Gysbers and senior forward Zac MacVoy garnering assists, to make it 2-1. The Bulldogs tallied a short-handed goal at 18:14 to round out the scoring for the first period, 3-1.
Lake State (0-1-0) cut it to 3-2 in the second with a power-play goal from sophomore forward Fred Cassiani, assisted by junior defenseman Matt Cowie. UM-D rounded completed its scoring at 8:59 with an even-strength goal and reclaimed a two-goal lead, 4-2.
The Lakers came back within a goal when junior forward Rick Schofield scored at 10:33. MacVoy and freshman forward Nick McParland drew assists.
LSSU was 2-for-6 on the power play. The Lakers held UM-D to 2-of-6 on the power play for the night. Laker junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 29 saves. Bulldogs goalie Brady Hjelle had 25 saves, including 11 in the second period.
The Lakers play at 5:07 p.m. Sunday at Michigan Tech during Round 2 of the Superior Cup.
