Lakers play first team in CCHA cluster


SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State returns to the road to play Nebraska-Omaha at 7:35 p.m. CST and 7:05 p.m. CST Saturday at the Qwest Center Arena.

LSSU (4-5-1 overall, 1-4-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) is headed to Nebraska-Omaha (4-1-3 overall, 1-1-2-1 CCHA) after back-to-back one-goal losses at Western Michigan on Nov. 6-7. Nebraska-Omaha is coming off a 3-0 loss and a 2-1 shootout win against Michigan State.  

UNO will be Lake Superior State's first CCHA cluster match-up, which means the Lakers will also play a home series against the Mavs. Alaska and Northern Michigan are also in LSSU's cluster.

The 2008-09 matchup between the Lakers and Mavericks left the Lakers with two losses, 3-2 Friday and 2-1 Saturday. The Lakers are returning one of their two goal scorers from last season's series. Sophomore forward Fred Cassiani netted two goals for LSSU, while UNO returns Eddie DelGrosso, who tallied two goals, and Nick Fanto, who netted one goal.

LSSU's junior forward Chad Nehring leads the Lakers in goals with seven, and is tied for first in the CCHA against league opponents with five (all power-play goals). Nehring is on a three-game scoring streak and is the league's top scorer in CCHA games with 5-2--7. Senior forward Zac MacVoy is in first in assists in against CCHA opponents with five and third overall with eight.

Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson leads the CCHA in saves with 172 in league competition.

Nebraska-Omaha's Rich Purslow leads the Mavericks with five goals and three assists. Purslow is tied for fifth in goal scoring in the CCHA overall.

The series will broadcast live on Yes FM 99.5 via a feed from KVNO 90.7 FM. 

The Lakers will play home November 20-21 against Alaska at the Taffy Abel Arena.
