Union defeat Lakers in shootout at RPI Tournament
TROY, N.Y. - Lake Superior State tied Union 0-0 through regulation and overtime before losing 1-0 in a shootout Friday night at the 59th annual RPI Holiday Classic.
The Lakers, who have lost two 1-0 shootout decisions this season, last played to a scoreless tie in February, 2004, at home against Bowling Green State.
The Lakers (6-7-2 overall) and Dutchmen (5-3-4 overall) played 65 minutes of scoreless hockey in the first game of the tournament. LSSU outshot the Dutchmen 12-11 in the first period and 11-8 in the second period.
Brian Mahoney-Wilson saved 30 shots for the game, allowing only one shootout goal. Union's Keith KinKaid also stopped at total of 30 shots and plus all three shootout attempts.
Lake Superior was 0-for-4 putting up a total of six shots on net in power-play opportunities. The Lakers held Union to 0-for-2 on the power play without ever giving up a shot on goal.
Stephane Boileau missed the net on the first shootout attempt by Union, which was the home team. The Lakers sent senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto to the red line for their first chance in the shootout, and Kaunisto's shot also missed.
Union's second shooter, Mario Valery-Trabucco, scored the lone goal for the shootout. Laker freshman forward Domenic Monardo and junior forward Rick Schofield were the other two Lakers to center ice for the shootout. Union sent Adam Presizniuk out as its third shooter.
The Lakers play Bentley at 4 p.m. Saturday in the tournament's consolation game. Host RPI defeated Bently 5-2 in the other semifinal contest.
