Alumni game is added to Hall of Fame weekend slate

SAULT STE. MARIE – More than two dozen former Lake Superior State hockey players will participate in an alumni game at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 25, to kick off an LSSU Athletics Hall of Fame weekend in honor of Laker greats Jim Dowd ’91 and Doug Weight ’91.

“It’s great to have enough guys come back for an alumni game,” said LSSU coach Jim Roque ’87, who will be one of the participants. “It’s just for fun. There will be recent grads and a couple guys, Con Metro ’67 and Tom Mitchell ’67, who were two original Lakers. It’s more about getting guys together. They will probably spend more time in the lockerroom than skating.”

The weekend also includes the 28^th annual Soo BlueLiners Golf Outing, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at Sault Country Club. The hall of fame induction dinner at the LSSU Arts Center begins with cocktails at 7 p.m., followed by dinner at 8 p.m. on the 26^th.

“The induction of Jimmy and Doug is a big reason why a lot of these guys are coming back,” Roque noted. “Obviously when you see them playing in the NHL, you’re proud to say those guys went to Lake Superior State. Players and fans tracked those guys throughout their careers. And they are really good ambassadors for the University and hockey program over the years. Any time we need help, they offer to assist us any way they can. This will be Jimmy’s first time back since he left.”

Roque expects even more alumni to attend the golf outing. Dowd and Weight aren’t playing in the alumni game, but Dowd plans to golf. Weight is recovering from shoulder surgery and will make an appearance at the golf outing.

The alumni rosters are also expected to include: Jason Trzcinski ’96, Kurt Miller ’94, Ben Keup ’00, Ryan Knox ’01, Tyler Palmer ’00, David Divita ’91, Jeremy Bachusz ’03, Mike Bachusz ’93, Jason Caster ’96, Dan Galarneau ’96, John Hendry ’93, Derek A. Smith ’07, Doug Laprade ’91, Dean Dixon ’87, Tim Harris ’91, Paul Constantin ’92, Troy Schwab ’09, Justin Gutwald ’08 and Dan Eves ’08.

The Laker hockey lockerroom and Soo BlueLiners room will be open following the alumni game so fans and friends can greet the alumni. Admission is by donation.

Participants in the Soo BlueLiners Golf Outing must pre-register with Howard Ledergerber by calling 906-248-5732. The cost is $35 for students, $75 for Soo Blueliners members and $85 for non-members.

Golfers can attend the Hall of Fame dinner for $15. The cost is $20 for non-golfers.
