Lakers turn the tables on Mavs

OMAHA, Neb. - After getting out-shot 18-7 and falling behind 2-0 during the first period of Friday's loss, the Lake Superior State hockey team set the tone early in front of 5,773 fans Saturday at the Qwest Center.

LSSU's Rick Schofield scored 59 seconds into Game 2 of the series, and teammate Will Acton made it 2-0 at 4:48. The Lakers went on to win 3-1, snap a six-game winless skid and split a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series for the second time this season.

Zach Trotman recorded his first collegiate assist, and Acton had the other helper on Schofield's goal. Schofield and Ben Power were credited with assists on Acton's goal. The Lakers (5-6-1 overall, 2-5-1-0 CCHA) narrowly out-shot the Mavericks in the opening period, 9-8.

Rookie Domenic Monardo extended LSSU's lead to 3-0 with a goal at 19:01 of the second period. Brad Cooper and John Scrymgeour garnered the assists.

Terry Broadhust scored UNO's lone goal at 2:13 of the third period. The Mavericks (5-2-3 overall, 2-2-2-1 CCHA) pulled goaltender Jeremie Dupont in favor of an extra attacker for more than three minutes and out-shot LSSU 18-7 in the third period, but failed to close in on the Lakers.

Dupont finished with 23 saves, while LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 30 saves. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

LSSU returns to Sault Ste. Marie and plays host to Alaska on Nov. 21-22.
