Lakers look for six points this weekend
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State, which skated to back-to-back 1-1 ties and won both shootouts 2-1 during a December home series against Bowling Green State, looks to pick up the scoring pace during this weekend’s rematch with the Falcons.
LSSU (6-11-7 overall, 4-8-6-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), sitting in ninth place in the CCHA with 22 points, heads to BGSU for games Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Falcons (7-17-2 overall, 2-14-2-0 CCHA) are 11th in the CCHA with eight points.
The Lakers and Falcons played two nearly identical games during the December match-up. BGSU scored both of its goals during the second period, while LSSU tied the game twice with third-period goals.
Six different Lakers notched one point each during the home series. Senior points leader Rick Schofield (10-11—21) and junior defenseman Kyle Haines (3-4—7) netted the game-tying goals for LSSU.
Bowling Green’s Chad Sumsion (4-3—7) and James McIntosh (5-4—9) netted the goals for the Falcons. The assists for both goals went to Marc Rodriguez (6-9—15) and David Solway (5-9—14).
In their last five games, the Lakers are 0-2-3 with shootout victories over Michigan State and Western Michigan. They have tied three straight, all at home, and are one tie away from matching their school record for single-season tie games, which is eight (2008-09). LSSU and WMU currently lead the CCHA in shootout victories with four each. The Lakers are 4-2 in shootouts this season.
The Falcons are 1-4-0 in their last five games. At home BGSU is 3-9-0 overall and 1-6-1 in the CCHA. The Lakers are 1-7-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the CCHA when playing on the road.
Sophomore forward Nick McParland (5-4—9) is tied for sixth in the CCHA (when playing against league opponents) in game-winning goals with two. Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (5-6-6-4) sits in third place against league opponents in save percentage (.928), seventh place in goals-against average (2.18) and is tied for eighth place in winning percentage (.500).
Bowling Green State leads the all-time record overall 72-63-10, including a 42-22-5 mark at home.
