McParland nets LSSU's only goal

DENVER, Colo. – Lake Superior State is now 3-4-1 this season during game two of a weekend series after losing 2-1 to Clarkson during Saturday's consolation round of the 19th annual Denver Cup.

The Lakers (5-9-2 overall) and Clarkson (7-5-2 overall) ended the first period in a scoreless deadlock. The Golden Knights' Jake Morley netted the first goal of the game at 4:54 of the second period while his team was short-handed.

LSSU sophomore forward Nick McParland (2-3—5) tied the game, 1-1, at 8:43 of the third period. McParlands’ goal was assisted by freshmen forwards Kyle Jean (1-6—7) and Kellan Lain (1-1—2).

Clarkson’s game-winning power-play goal was scored by Allan McPherson at 12:37 of the third period.

With 1:03 left in the third period, LSSU failed to score despite having a two-man advantage due to a Clarkson penalty and goalie Kevin Kapalka pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

Lake Superior was 0-for-5 on the power-play, while Clarkson went 1-for-4.

Kapalka totaled 29 saves, and Clarkson’s Paul Karpowich stopped 30. Shots on goal for both teams were 31 apiece.

The Lakers, who have lost four straight -- all on the road -- return home Dec. 3-4 to take on Bowling Green. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for both nights.
