Lakers sweep Ferris
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State completed the sweep against Ferris Saturday with a 4-0 victory at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers are now 5-5-2 overall and 3-4-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (4-1-1), who was also in goal for Friday's 1-0 win, completed back to back shutouts for the first time since Blaine Lacher on March 11-12, 1994.
Kapalka made a total of 33 saves during Friday's contest. The Lakers totaled 21 shots on net. The Bulldogs’ Pat Nagle gave up four goals and stopped 12 saves in 40 minutes of play, while Taylor Nelson made 5 saves in the third period.
The Lakers and Bulldogs played 20 minutes of scoreless hockey before LSSU began its scoring spree. The Lakers came out strong in the second period, netting three goals in less then five minutes of play.
Freshman forward Kellan Lain (1-1—2) netted his first collegiate goal from freshmen defender Andrew Perrault (0-2—2) and forward Kyle Jean (1-5—6). Lain’s goal proved to be LSSU’s game-winner at 1:07 of the second period. Jean is leading LSSU's freshman class in points.
Sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (7-6—13) netted goals for the Lakers at 1:55 and 11:46 of the middle stanza, and junior forward Cassiani netted LSSU’s other goal at 4:37. Monardo now leads LSSU in goals scored and points. Freshman forward Dan Radke (1-3—4) notched an assist on the Lakers' second and third goals of the night.
The Lakers and Bulldogs held each other 0-for-4 on the power-play.
