Lakers finish 0-1-1 in Superior Cup

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State lost its final game of the Superior Cup, 6-2, to Michigan Tech Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. 

The Lakers (0-1-1) tied the game, 1-1, at the 7:20 mark of the first period.  LSSU’s goal was scored by Zach Trotman (2-0—2) unassisted. The Huskies came back with three unanswered goals, giving them a 4-1 lead.

Matt Cowie’s (2-0—2) scored at 8:14 of the third period to trim MTU's lead to 4-2. His goal was assisted by Rick Schofield (2-3—5) and Domenic Monardo (1-3—4). MTU (2-0-0) went on to score two more goals, including an empty-net goal.

The Lakers started freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka, who faced 25 shots and made 19 saves in 56:59.

LSSU's next home series is Oct. 22 and 23 against Colgate, during Pink in the Rink. The Lakers head to Notre Dame Oct. 14-15.

The Lakers' all-time record during the four-year history of the Superior Cup is 1-4-3. MTU won both games of the showcase in 2010-11.
