Lakers lose OT battle at UND

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Lake Superior State (12-16-9) lost to eighth-ranked Notre Dame (22-10-5) 3-2 in overtime Friday during game one of the Central Collegiate Hockey Assocation Second Round  Playoffs.

In other second-round contests, Ferris State defeated Western Michigan 3-1, Miami beat Alaska 4-1, and Michigan defeated Bowling Green 5-1.

LSSU fell to 0-1-9 in overtime contests in 2010-11.

At 6:48 of the first period, the second-seeded Irish took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by T.J. Tynan with assists from Jeff Costello and Sam Calabrese. The Lakers tied it, 1-1, at 9:38 of the second period. Senior forward Chad Nehring (7-4—11) scored on assists from junior forward Fred Cassiani (6-5—11) and sophomore forward Ben Power (4-5—9).

Senior forward Rick Schofield (17-17—34) notched his 103rd career point with a goal at 11:14 of the second period. Schofield’s goal was assisted by linemates Will Acton (9-15—24) and Domenic Monardo (12-17—28) and gave LSSU a 2-1 lead.

The Fighting Irish tied the game at 17:42 of the tied the game, 2-2, with a goal from Anders Lee. Costello notched his second assist of the game on Lee’s goal along with Tynan.

Notre Dame’s game-winning goal was scored at 4:52 of the overtime period from Costello from Joe Lavin.

The Lakers and Irish were both 1-for-5 on the power-play.

Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka made 34 saves for the Lakers, while UND's Mike Johnson stopped 24 shots on goal.
