Lakers play to fourth straight shootout at home

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State and Alaska skated to a 2-2 draw Friday, and the Lakers tied a school record for single-season ties with eight this season.

The Lakers (9-12-8 overall, 7-9-7-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) gained one point during 2-0 shootout loss to Alaska (12-12-5, 9-11-5-3 CCHA). Halfway through the weekend series, LSSU remained tied for seventh place in the CCHA, while Alaska held onto sixth place. The Lakers are now tied with Northern Michigan instead of Ohio State, which dropped to ninth.

The Nanooks took a 1-0 lead just over the 10-minute mark of the first period with a goal from Derek Klassen. Klassen's goal was assisted by Chad Gehon. At 9:15 of the second period, Alaska took a 2-0 lead on a goal from Joe Sova, assisted by Gehon and Klassen.

LSSU freshman defenseman Andrew Perrault (1-3—4) took a shot from the point off a faceoff and notched is first collegiate goal at 9:55 of the second period, bringing the Lakers within one goal of the Nanooks. At 2:39 of the third period, senior forward Chad Nehring (6-3—9) buried a puck and tied the game 2-2. Sophomore forward Ben Power (2-3—5) and senior forward Tyson Hobbins (1-2—3) notched the assists.

After a scoreless five-minute sudden-death overtime, which included power plays for both teams, the Lakers and Nanooks prepared for the shootout. Alaska’s Colton Beck and Kevin Petovello tallied the winning goals.

UAF netminder Scott Greenham stopped shots by LSSU senior forward Rick Schofield and sophomore forward Domenic Monardo.

Greenham (12-12-5) made 24 saves for the night, while freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (8-7-7-4) stopped 29 shots on goal for LSSU.

The Lakers were 0-for-2 on the power play and held UAF to 0-for-3.

The Lakers, who are 0-0-4 in their last four home games and 3-1-4 in their last eight contests, face the Nanooks again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. UAF owns a three-point lead over LSSU in the CCHA standings.
