Lakers end their playoff run
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Lake Superior State (13-17-9) lost game three of the Central Collegiate Hockey Assocation Second Round of Playoffs, 4-2, at eighth-ranked Notre Dame (23-11-5) Sunday.
The Lakers fell behind 3-0 in the first period and were out-shot 21-10 during the first two periods. Junior forward Fred Cassiani (7-5—12) netted LSSU’s first goal at 17:39 of the second period. Cassiani’s goal, a power-play goal and his third goal in two games, was assisted by sophomore forward Ben Power (4-6—10) and junior defenseman Kyle Haines (4-6—10).
Forty-one seconds later, Notre Dame's Bryan Rust answered to take a 4-1 lead.
Freshman forward Colin Campbell (4-3—7) brought the Lakers within two goals of the Irish at 18:42 of the second period. Senior forward Rick Schofield (17-18—35) recorded the only assist.
The Lakers and Irish were both 1-for-3 on the power-play.
Riley Sheahan, Jeff Costello and Joe Lavin also scored for UND.
Cassiani totaled 3-1--4 during the three-game series, which was LSSU's best playoff run since 2007.
LSSU freshman goalie Kevin Kapalka (12-12-8) totaled 24 saves during the contest. Notre Dame’s Mike Johnson stopped 13 shots.
