Lakers sweep Northern Michigan
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Lake Superior State (9-13-7 overall, 7-9-6 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) blanked Northern Michigan 2-0 Saturday to record its first road sweep of the 2010-11 season.
LSSU retained the Cappo Cup by winning the four-game total-goals series, 10-6.
The Lakers led 1-0 at the end of the first period after senior forward Will Acton (8-11—19) netted LSSU’s first goal at 6:11. Freshman defenseman Zach Trotman (6-13—19) had the assist.
Senior forward Rick Schofield (13-15—28) netted his second power-play goal of the series at 3:25 of the second period. Senior forward Matt Cowie (4-11—15) assisted on Schofield’s goal.
LSSU was 1-for-6 on the power-play and held NMU to 0-for-6. The Wildcats' power play was scoreless (0-for-8) for the weekend.
LSSU freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (8-7-6) totaled 31 saves for his third shutout of the season. NMU’s Reid Ellingson totaled 24 saves.
NMU dropped to 11-15-4 overall and 9-11-2 in the CCHA. LSSU, which improved its road record to 4-8-1, and Ohio State jumped ahead of the Wildcats in the CCHA standings and are now tied for seventh place. The Lakers previously swept Ferris State and Colgate at home this season, but hadn't recorded a road sweep since Jan. 2-3, 2010, at Robert Morris.
The Lakers return home Feb. 11-12 to host Alaska. They are 3-1 in their last four games, which were all on the road, and are 0-1-3 in their last three at home.
