Two Lakers are named CCHA Players of the Week
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Two Lake Superior State players earned Central Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the Week honors after the Lakers defeated Ferris State, 1-0 and 4-0, during last weekend’s home series.
Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (Mississauga, Ont.) was named CCHA Goalie of the Week. He totaled 63 saves while recording back-to-back shutouts. Kapalka is now 3-0-1 in the CCHA and 4-1-1 overall with a three-game win streak. The Lakers last recorded back-to-back shutouts in 1994. Kapalka has played 147:28 consecutive scoreless minutes.
Kapalka is ranked fifth in the CCHA in goals-against average at 1.99 and first in save percentage at .929.
Junior defender Kyle Haines (Weyburn, Sask.) was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week. Haines totaled four blocked shots during both games against Ferris State. He ended a +1 during Saturday’s win with an assist on Domenic Monardo’s first goal. Haines is third on the team in points by defensemen with 0-3—3.
The CCHA Offensive Player of the Week was Michigan State’s Derek Grant, who totaled 1-4—5 during the Spartans’ split with Ohio State. T.J. Tynan of Notre Dame was named Rookie of the Week. He had 1-2—3 during a UND split with Michigan.
The Lakers (5-5-2 overall, 3-4-1-0 CCHA) play at Michigan on Friday and Saturday.
