Kaunisto is named CHL Player of the Week
WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita Thunder defenseman Steven Kaunisto was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week on Nov. 3.
Kaunisto, who played for Lake Superior State from 2006-10, scored a goal and assisted on three others in three games last weekend in which the Thunder was 3-0-0. The 24-year old blue liner was also a staggering +10, including a +5 finish on Sunday during the Thunder's 8-0 shutout at Tulsa.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Kaunisto has five points in five games this season and currently leads the CHL in plus/minus. During his sophomore and junior seasons with the Lakers, Kaunisto was a teammate of current Thunder forward Troy Schwab.
Schwab has 3-3--6 through five games. Former Laker forward Aaron Davis (1999-03) is the Thunder's second leading scorer with 3-6--9 through seven games. Another former Laker, Kory Scoran (2002-06) is second on the team in points by defenseman with 1-3--4.
Davis played in Tulsa last season, while Schwab started in Johnstown of the ECHL. Scoran competed in Holland in 2009-10.
