Spartans do their damage in the third period
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State, playing its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest since Dec. 11, gave up four goals during a 10-minute span of the third period Friday and lost 4-0 to Michigan State. The loss ended LSSU's home unbeaten streak at five games (3-0-2).
LSSU (6-11-4 overall, 4-7-3-2 CCHA) and MSU (9-11-3 overall, 5-9-1-0 CCHA) were scoreless through the first and second periods. It was the third straight game in which the Spartans were shut out during the opening period.
MSU junior Daultan Leveille recovered his own turnover in LSSU's zone and opened the scoring with an unassisted power-play goal at 5:45 of the third period. Spartan Dean Chelios made it 2-0 at 12:53, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native Brett Perlini followed with back-to-back goals at 13:58 and 15:50.
Michigan State, which out-shot LSSU 31-24, was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Lake Superior State was 0-for-2. Spartan goaltender Will Yanakeff, a freshman, improved to 3-1-0 with the win, while Laker rookie Kevin Kapalka dropped to 5-6-3-2.
Derek Grant had two assists for MSU.
