Lake Superior State defeats Miami to split series
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State continued its Saturday night hot streak with a 4-3 victory over Miami. LSSU is 6-1-2 during game two of CCHA series. The Lakers (13-10-3 overall, 8-8-2-2 CCHA) jumped from sixth to third place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 28 points.
LSSU snapped Miami's four game road win streak. Miami (12-10-2 overall, 8-8-2-1 CCHA) is now tied for fourth place with Notre Dame with 27 points, although the Irish have two games in hand on the RedHawks and Lakers.
Miami opened the scoring with a goal at 9:49 of the first period from Jimmy Mullin.
Junior forward Nick McParland (12-7--19) netted a power-play goal for the Lakers, making it at 1-1 game at 5:11 of the second period. Senior defenseman Kyle Haines (3-13--16) and sophomore forward Colin Campbell (5-12--17) notched assists on McParland's goal.
Forty seconds later, LSSU went ahead 2-1 on a goal scored by junior defenseman Zach Trotman (7-8--15) from freshmen Stephan Perfetto (1-4--5) and freshman Kevin Czuczman (2-6--8). Miami's Matt Tomassoni tied the game 2-2 at 7:41, ending a stretch of three goals scored during a 2:30 span.
Campbell put LSSU up 3-2 at 15:10 of the second. Sophomore defenseman Matt Bruneteau (0-4--4) and senior foward Fred Cassiani (4-10--14) drew the assists.
Cassiani scored the Lakers' game-winning goal at 2:14 of the third period on an assist from Campbell. Mullin netted the RedHawks' final goal at 3:19 of the third. Miami out-shot LSSU 18-2 during the third period.
Sophomore netminder Kevin Kapalka made 43 saves for the Lakers, marking his second-highest total of the season. Cody Reichard totaled 22 saves for the RedHawks.
The Lakers were 1-for-4 on the power-play and held Miami to 0-for-3. LSSU is now tied for fourth place nationally on the penalty kill with Michigan State. Both teams have a kill rate of .890.
