McParland scores LSSU's lone goal and is named to all-tournament team

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Lake Superior State came up short against Rochester Instatute of Technology's stingy defense and lost the championship game of the Catamount Cup 3-1 to the Tigers Friday at the University of Vermont.

RIT (10-6-2 overall), which beat 11th-ranked Ferris State 3-0 on Thursday, held opponents scoreless during five of six periods during the tournament. The Tigers are 10th nationally in scoring defense, averaging 2.22 goals per game.

RIT scored all three goals during the first 24:46 of play against LSSU.The Tigers led 1-0 at the end of the first period despite getting outshot 15-9, then got goals from Adam Mitchell and Jeff Smith during a 36-second span early in the second period.

Junior forward Nick McParland (10-6--16), who was named to the all-tournament team, netted the Lakers' lone goal at 9:22 of the second period on assists from sophomore defenseman Andrew Perrault (0-6--6) and freshman forward Buddy Robinson (2-3--5). McParland’s goal brought the Lakers (12-8-2 overall) within two goals of the Tigers, but LSSU was shut out during the third period.

Sophomore goaltender Kevin Murdock totaled 25 saves for the Lakers, while Josh Watson stopped 32 shots on goal for the Tigers.

The Lakers were 0-for-2 on the power-play, holding RIT to 0-for-3.

LSSU will be home Tuesday against Western Ontario in exhibition play at the Taffy Abel Arena. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
