LSSU takes two points from Michigan with a shootout victory
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Lake Superior State (12-9-3 overall, 7-7-2-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) played to a 2-2 tie and won the shootout 2-1 in six rounds at 13th-ranked Michigan (12-8-4 overall, 6-6-4-1 CCHA) Saturday at Yost Arena.
Junior forwards Domenic Monardo (8-12--20) and Nick McParland (11-7—18) netted LSSU's goals during the shootout as the 18th-ranked Lakers ended a 14-game losing streak in Ann Arbor and hung on to fourth place in the CCHA standings. They also improved to 2-0 in shootouts in 2011-12.
Saturday's first period was a replica of Friday's for the Lakers, who played in front of a sellout crowd of 6,637 fans. After ample scoring opportunities LSSU failed to net a goal. The Lakers had 13 shots on goal while Michigan had 14.
During the second period of play, the Lakers killed off back-to-back tripping penalties. Michigan took at 1-0 lead at 14:40 of the second period on a goal by David Wohlberg. The Lakers came back to tie it, 1-1, at 18:19. Junior forward Ben Power (3-6—9) netted LSSU's goal on assists from sophomore forward Kyle Jean (10-7—17) and sophomore defenseman Matt Bruneteau (2-6—8).
Thirteen seconds after the Lakers tied the game 1-1, Michigan's Alex Guptill scored for a 2-1 U-M lead heading into the third period.
LSSU tied the game 2-2 at 2:58 of the third period. The all-freshman line of Buddy Robinson (3-3—6), Andrew Dommett (0-1—1) and Chris Ciotti (2-7—9) were the point grabbers with Robinson scoring the goal. Dommett collected his first collegiate point with the assist.
LSSU goaltender Kevin Kapalka (11-7-3) totaled 35 saves, while U-M netminder Adam Janecyk (0-1-1) finished with 34 saves. The Lakers out-shot Michigan 13-5 in the third period. Kapalka gave up a shootout goal to Luke Moffatt during the Wolverines' first attempt, then shut U-M out the rest of the way.
The Lakers return home Jan. 13-14 home for a series against the Miami RedHawks, who trail LSSU by one point in the CCHA standings after sweeping Michigan State this weekend.
