Lakers play host to Bowling Green in first-round playoff series

SAULT STE. MARIE – With Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State earned the right to host a Central Collegiate Hockey Association First-Round Playoff series for the third straight year.

The Lakers (16-19-1 overall, 11-16-1-1 CCHA) play host to Bowling Green State (13-18-5 overall, 10-15-3-1) in a best-of-three series beginning at 7:35 p.m. Friday at Taffy Abel Arena. LSSU and BGSU also play at 7:05 p.m. Saturday and, if-necessary, at 7:05 p.m. Sunday. All games will be broadcast live on Yes-FM 99.5 with a live pay-per-view webcast on America One.

Tickets are on sale for the series at the Norris Center Ticket Office. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children and $3 for LSSU students with a valid student I.D.

Last season, LSSU swept a first-round home playoff series against Alaska, 4-3 and 2-0. In 2010-11, the Lakers swept Ohio State at home, 4-0 and 3-2.

Earlier this season, the Lakers gave up a season-high 11 goals during 4-1 and 7-3 regular-season losses at BGSU.

In other first-round series, Northern Michigan travels to Michigan, and Michigan State plays at Alaska. Miami, Notre Dame, Western Michigan, Ohio State and Ferris State received first-round byes.

Laker men’s basketball travels to Wayne State

With Saturday’s 72-70 home victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Wayne State, the Lake Superior State men’s basketball team secured the No. 8 seed in the GLIAC Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Lakers (14-12) play a rematch with the top-seeded Warriors (17-8) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Detroit. LSSU and WSU were 1-1 against each other during the regular season.

The men’s tournament field includes No. 7 Northwood at No. 2 Michigan Tech, No. 6 Ferris State at No. 3 Findlay, No. 5 Hillsdale at No. 4 Grand Valley State.
