SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State University opens its 2012-13 season with a home exhibition game at 7:05 p.m. Saturday against Ryerson University. This will be the first time the Lakers and Rams will meet at the Taffy Abel Arena. LSSU is coming off a winning 2011-12 season after finishing with an overall record of 18-17-5.
LSSU is taking on Ryerson for the second time in school history. The first meeting was during the 2010-11 season at Ryerson. The Lakers defeated the Rams 3-0. Junior Zach Sternberg scored two goals for the Lakers. Senior forward Ben Power tallied the game-winning goal. Junior forward Colin Campbell is the only returning Laker to notch an assist against Ryerson.
Ryerson is heading into exhibition play with an overall record of 2-3-0. The Rams are coming off a 7-1 victory over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology at the York Invitational. Ryerson will head to Big Rapids for a Sunday afternoon match-up against the Ferris State Bulldogs.
The Lakers return their top three goal scorers from last season, and they contributed a combined total of 81 points. Senior captain Domenic Monardo led the Lakers in points with 11-18--29, while senior forward Nick McParland led LSSU in goals with 14-13--27. Campbell rounded out the top three with 9-16--25.
At the end of the 2011-12 season, several LSSU players landed on Central Collegiate Hockey Association top 10 lists. Sophomore forward Stephen Perfetto was tied for first against CCHA opponents in short-handed goals and points with 2-1--3 and led LSSU overall with three short-handed goals. Monardo tallied five game-winning goals overall and was tied for second against league opponents with four. Campbell was tied for seventh against CCHA opponents in power-play points with 2-8--10.
Junior netminder Kevin Kapalka ranked seventh on the CCHA's save percentage list at .914. Kapalka finished the 2011-12 season 17-14-5 overall and 11-11-4-4 against CCHA opponents. Kapalka received 2012-13 CCHA Pre-season All-Conference Team Honorable Mention.
During the 41st and final CCHA season, the Lakers will play 20 homes games, including home series against Michigan State, Michigan, Miami, and Ohio State. LSSU will also host Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Michigan Tech and play at Bemidji State.
