Laker Hockey Inks Nine Prospects to National Letters of Intent

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—Lake Superior State head coach Damon Whitten and assistants, Rich Metro and Mike York, have announced the signing of nine athletes to National Letters of Intent as part of the 2018 NCAA spring signing period.
The 2018-19 Laker Hockey class includes forwards Dustin Manz, Mirsolov Mucha, Pierre-Luc Veillette, Jesse Tucker, Melvin Karlsson, Spencer DenBeste along with defenseman Alec Semandel, Mitchell Oliver and Jacob Nordqvist.
 
Dustin Manz / Forward / 5-10 / 194lbs/ Vanderbilt, Mich. / Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL)
 •    Totaled 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists) ranking fourth on the team
 •    Mainland Division Banner Winner
 •    Mainland Division Team Championship
 •    Costal Team Championship
 •    Individual Steal Man Award

Coaching Staff On Manz: Can play both a physical and skilled game and is good on faceoffs. Has been a top scorer on every level. Is playing important minutes in the BCHL playoffs as his team is in the finals.

 •    Tallied 55 points (30 goals, 25 assists) in 2017-18 to lead the team in scoring
 •    Named team MVP

Coaching Staff On Mucha: Big strong forward with an excellent shot. Is capable of scoring big goals from anywhere on the ice. Finished the season with 30 goals which led his team and was third best in the NAHL.

Pierre-Luc Veillette / Forward / 5-10 / 170lbs / Drummondville, Québec / Ottawa Junior Senators (CCHL)
 •    Ranked No.2 on the team an No.5 in the league in scoring (33 goals, 32 assists)
 •    All-Graduate Team selection
 •    Named to the CCHL Third All-Star Team
 •    Sister, Audrey-Ann, committed to played women's ice hockey at Clarkston University

Coaching Staff on Veillette: Speedy forward who is tenacious on the puck. Can score goals and has great vision to set up teammates. Finished 5th in the CCHL in points and second in the league with 33 goals.

Jesse Tucker / Forward / 5-11 / 175lbs / Longlac, Ontario / North York Junior Rangers (OJHL)
 •    Lead the team in scoring with 52 points (17 goals, 33 assists)
 •    Invited to OJHL Top Prospects Game
 •    Selected by the Owen Sound Attack in the 2016 OHL Draft (12th round, 231st pick)
 •    Twin brother, Tyler, currently playing professional for the Barrie Colts in the OHL

Coaching Staff on Tucker: A very high-end skilled forward playing in the OJHL. Competes hard and has an excellent work ethic. Led his team in scoring this past year.

Spencer DenBeste / Forward / 6-0 / 185lbs / Marquette, Mich. / Springfield Junior Blues (NAHL)
 •    Played in 27 games during the 2017-18 season
 •    Totaled 9 points (6 goals, 3 assists)
 •    Played locally for the Soo Indians U18 AAA Midget Team

Coaching Staff on DenBeste: An extremely competitive player who brings a physical presence and high energy every time he steps on the ice. Has the ability to score goals and is a responsible defensive forward.

Melvin Karlsson / Forward / 6-2 / 195lbs / Angelholm, Sweden / Rögle BK (J20 Superelit)
 •    Totaled 36 points (16 goals, 20 assists) to lead the team in scoring
 •    Finished with 23 points (8 goals, 15 assist) during the 2016-17 season
 •    J20 Superelit Bronze medalist (2017-18)

Coaching Staff on Karlson: Powerful skater that has a physical presence on the ice. Plays a solid two-way game. Led his team in scoring playing in the Swedish Junior Hockey League.

 •    Totaled 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) during 2017-18 season
 •    Second among team defenseman in +/- with a total +17 (17-18)

Coaching Staff on Semandel: Big strong smooth skating defenseman. Plays both the power play and penalty kill and is very reliable 5-on-5.

Mitchell Oliver / Defense / 6-0 / 195lbs / Kelowna, British Columbia / Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL)
 •    Totaled 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists)
 •    Tied for most goals by a defenseman in the BCHL
 •    Team Captain
 •    Received Top Defenseman team award
 •    Received BCHL Humanitarian of the Year award

Coaching Staff on Oliver: An all-around solid defenseman. Was the captain of his junior team and played in every situation. Tied for the most goals by a defenseman in the BCHL last year.


Jacob Nordqvist / Defense / 5-9 / 180lbs / Gothenburg, Sweden/ Madison Capitols and Fargo Force (USHL)

 •    Totaled 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) in a split season with Fargo and Madison
 •    Played 2016-17 season with Frölunda in the Swedish J20 league tallying 18 points (2 goals, 16 assists).
 •    Competed in three-straight playoff seasons in Swedish junior circuit (2014-17)

Coaching Staff on Nordqvist: A gifted offensive defenseman. Sees the ice extremely well and is capable of making any power-play better. A product of the USHL and one of the top organizations in Sweden.
