Tennis player Sergiu Laza named GLIAC Freshman of the Year

BAY CITY, Mich. –Sergiu Laza (Toronto, Ont.) of theLake Superior State men’s tennis team was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. This honor was voted on by league coaches.

“This is a great honor for both Sergiu and the program to receive,” said coach Tom Linhart. “For a first-year player, Sergiu truly played with the poise of a seasoned veteran, especially in our biggest GLIAC matches. He will be looked upon to a catalyst for the success of our program in years to come.”

Laza ended his freshman season 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC at No. 2 singles. Laza enjoyed a five-match winning streak, was 9-1 in his last 10 singles matches, and led the Lakers in singles wins.

Laza played the majority of his doubles matches at No. 3 with partner Travis Toth, who is a sophomore. Laza and Toth ended 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC, with an eight match winning streak. The week of March 22, Laza was named GLIAC Player of the Week.

Also joining Laza on the All-GLIAC First Team was sophomore Razvan Mag (Windsor, Ont.).

Mag was tied for fourth on the team in singles wins with six overall. Five of those wins came at No. 1 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Mag finished with a record of 6-15 overall. He was 3-4 in the GLIAC in singles and doubles.

“Raz really earned this honor,” said Linhart. “He had a tough start to the season but really came on strong in conference play. I expect Raz’s name to come up more on all-conference lists in the next couple of years.”

Junior Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) received All-GLIAC honorable mention for his performance in 2009-10. Wegrzyn, who is a senior academically, finished his last season as a Laker with a singles record of 8-12 overall. He was 7-11 at No. 3 singles, where he played a majority of his matches. His overall doubles record was 7-12, and he was 5-9 at No. 1 doubles while partnered with Mag.

“Pawel will be missed next season as he was a true leader for our team this season,” Linhart said. “His ability to motivate his teammates both on and off the court was invaluable to our success this season.”
