LSSU falls to GVSU, beats Findlay at GLIAC Tournament
MIDLAND - Lake Superior State lost 5-2 to Grand Valley State during the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, then beat Findlay 5-3 in the second round.
The Lakers (9-9) entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, while GVSU (12-10) was fifth. Findlay was seeded eighth. LSSU plays Michigan Tech in the fifth-place match Sunday in Midland.
LSSU's No. 2 doubles team of Brandon Clayton and Robert Nelson was 2-0 for the day. The duo beat GVSU's Brock Plangger and Phillipp Claus, 8-6, and topped Findlay's Josh Smedley and David Brooks, 8-3.
Travis Toth and Sergiu Laza beat GVSU at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
Laza, Clayton, Toth and Nelson garnered straight set singles wins against the Oilers.
