Laza is named to All-GLIAC First Team

BAY CITY, Mich. – Lake Superior State sophomore Sergiu Laza (Toronto, Ont.) was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team in men’s tennis.

Laza finished the season 12-9 overall and 6-3 in the GLIAC at No. 1 singles. He was ranked seventh in the Midwest Region in singles. Laza and doubles partner Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) were 12-10 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC at No. 1 doubles. Clayton and Laza are ranked fifth in the Midwest Region in doubles.

“Sergiu had an outstanding second season. He really stepped up this season while playing the top spot for us,” said coach Tom Linhart.  “He truly showed the impact that one player can have on a team and was a crucial component in the wins we had this season.  He is a great player and the accolades he has received are well worth it.”

Laza was the only Laker to finish with an overall winning record for men’s tennis during the 2011 season and he has one of the best records ever for No. 1 player at LSSU. The Lakers finished there season 4-19 overall, 2-7 GLIAC.

Clayton and freshman Ryne DuShane (Holland, Mich.) received All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Clayton was 5-14 overall at No. 2 singles and 5-4 in the GLIAC. DuShane was 10-11 overall playing at the four, five, and six positions in singles, and he was 3-5 in the GLIAC.
