SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's cross country team will start off its 2017 season this Saturday (Sept. 9) when the Lakers run in Ferris State University's 43rd annual Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich.
The men's collegiate 8,000-meter event will get underway at approximately 10:15 a.m. (ET) and take place at the Katke Golf Course on the FSU campus.
Two high school races will also be a part of the invitational schedule with the prep girls 5,000 meters set to start at 11 a.m. (ET) proceeded by the boys 5,000 meters at 11:45 a.m. (ET). The invitational is open to the public and admission is free of charge. Live stats won't be available, but a full recap will be posted following the conclusion of the day's races.
Lake Superior State, under the direction first-year interim head coach Rob Gallinger, welcomes back five letterwinners from the 2016 squad. The 2017 team features five freshmen, three sophomores, and two juniors. Top LSSU returnees are a trio of sophomores - Jack Miles, Parker Wyngaard, and Zach Workman.
A season ago, LSSU claimed 11th place at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Cross Country Championships (Oct. 22) in Big Rapids, Mich. The Lakers would go on to take part in the 2016 NCAA Division Ii Midwest Region Championships (Nov. 5) in Evansville, Ind., placing 26th overall.
Lake Superior State's next action on the course will occur Friday, Sept. 15, when the Lakers compete in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational at MSU's Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
