BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - A productive season-opening performance was turned in by the Lake Superior State University men's cross country team this Saturday (Sept. 9) at the 43rd annual Ferris State University Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Lakers, under the direction of first-year interim head coach Rob Gallinger, placed four individuals among the top 11 finishers and captured second-place honors with a 37-points output in the 8K race held at FSU's Katke Golf Course. Host Ferris State won top team honors with 26 points scored.
Freshman David Mitter was able to start his collegiate career in notable way by leading Lake Superior State with a second-place time of 27:00.9. Junior Garett Smith crossed the finish line with a 27:12.7 time to earn fourth place honors while junior Parker Wyngaard's time of 27:30.5 proved deserving of an eight-place showing.
Junior Jack Miles claimed 11th place as a result of running a 27:56.8 time. Junior Zach Workman and freshman Kendal Delpiere captured 17th and 18th place following times of 28:42.9 and 28:48.2, respectively.
Freshman Michael Gills and junior Dylan Richards rounded out the Lake State runners. Gills clocked a 29:32.2 time to garner 23rd place while Richards posted a time of 30:31.3 to achieve 26th place among the 37-participant field.
Lake Superior State's next action will occur Friday, Sept. 15, when the Lakers run in the Michigan State Auto Owners Insurance/Playmakers Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. The 8K men's race is scheduled for an 12:15 p.m. (EDT) start at the Forest Akers East Golf Course on the MSU campus.
