Laker women head into Thanksgiving break with a 6-0 record

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will take a 6-0 record into its brief Thanksgiving break after cruising to an 80-52 non-conference victory over Marygrove on Sunday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
The Lakers are off until Dec. 4 when they play their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Hillsdale. Their next home game is Jan. 3 against Saginaw Valley State.
Jackie Armstrong scored 21 points, and Alyssa VanderWal had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead LSSU past the Mustangs. Annie Dykhouse scored a career-high 12 points and picked up four assists as the Lakers controlled the game with its post play.
Sophomore Nicole Marshall filled in for Ronlea Peterson at point guard early in the second half. Peterson and guard Emily Joseph collided at mid-court when diving for a loose ball and did not finish the game. Peterson had four assists, and Joseph and Marshall added three each. The perimeter trio also combined to total 16 rebounds.
LSSU shot 37.2 percent from the field and made 20-of-28 free throws. The Lakers were 2-for-17 from three-point range. They out-rebounded Marygrove, 57-42.
Marygrove (1-6) shot 29.5 percent from the field and 11-of-16 at the free-throw line.
