Laker women end challenging month on winning note
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team concluded a challenging month-long stretch of road games on a winning note by beating St. Joseph's 95-35 Tuesday during Day 2 of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge hosted by Bellarmine.
LSSU (8-5) hit season highs in points scored with 95 and team field-goal percentage of 63.2 percent. The Lakers shot 80.6 percent from the field in the first half to build a 55-17 command.
Jackie Armstrong was 8-for-8 from the field in the first half and 9-for-11 for the game to lead the Lakers with 22 points. Emily Joseph followed with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Alyssa VanderWal added 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Allison Jaynes also scored 12 points.
Armstrong and Joseph were named to the all-tournament team.
The Lakers made 6-of-14 three-point attempts and 17-of-24 free throws. They out-rebounded St. Joseph's, 53-20.
The Pumas fell to 0-10.
After posting a 2-5 record during seven straight road games, Lake Superior State finally returns home to play its next five games in the friendly confines of Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers begin their homestand at 1 p.m. Saturday against Saginaw Valley State.
