Lakers top Pumas to improve to 3-1 against GLVC
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's 84-67 Wednesday to pull off a GLIAC vs. GLVC home-court sweep and improve to 3-1 for the season against the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Lakers (7-2) head into their first road game in a month with a six-game win streak. They resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at Saginaw Valley State. LSSU finished 6-1 during its December home stand.
Freshman forward Maria Blazejewski scored 20 points to lead four LSSU players in double figures. Junior Nicole Marshall turned in a double double, totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Joseph had 13 points and Ronlea Peterson 12.
Sophomore center Cassy Schemberger scored eight points and had a career-high 15 rebounds.
LSSU's starting five cruised to an early 25-point lead, 32-7. Peterson scored 11 points in the first half, which the Lakers led, 46-30. The Lakers were 7-of-13 from behind the arc during the first half.
St. Joseph's (3-8) cut the lead to 13 points during the first five minutes of the second half. The Pumas forced LSSU to fight its way back to a 20-point lead. The Lakers commanded the game, 79-56, with 3:52 remaining.
LSSU shot 42.9 percent from the field, including 10-of-23 from three-point range. The Lakers made 26-of-37 free throws and domianted the boards, 44-34.
Natalie Appelhans scored 14 points to lead St. Joseph's, which shot 41.9 percent from the field, including 2-of-13 from three-point range. The Pumas made 13-of-20 free throws.
Also at Bud Cooper Gynmasium Wednesday, Northwood defeated Bellarmine, 71-56.
