Fifth-ranked Michigan Tech prevails in GLIAC semifinal game

HOUGHTON - It's simply a matter of when the fifth-ranked Michigan Tech women's basketball team will make its run.

During Friday's Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game, the Huskies made their move with 13:35 to go. And the Huskies (27-2) never let up in front of 1,812 home-court fans.

Ignited by three three-pointers by Sam Hoyt and two by Katie Zimmerman, Michigan Tech out-scored Lake Superior State 35-2 during a 12:41 span to beat the Lakers 72-43. The Huskies trailed 38-36 when their run began.

Lake Superior State, which ended its season with a 15-13 record, led throughout most of the first half. The Lakers made 4-of-5 three-point attempts, blocked three Huskie shots and forced seven MTU turnovers to take a 28-26 lead into intermission.

Cassy Schemberger, who was in foul trouble during much of the first half, converted a three-point play at 13:35 of the second half to give the Lakers their final lead of the game. LSSU was held to five second-half field goals.

Nicole Marshall totaled 14 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead LSSU. Maria Blazejewski finished with nine points. LSSU shot 31.4 percent from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and made 6-of-7 free throws.

GLIAC Player of the Year Katie Wysocky totaled 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead MTU. She was one of four double-figure scorers for the Huskies, who shot 53.2 percent from the field, including 8-of-17 from behind the arc. MTU made 14-of-16 free throws and out-rebounded LSSU, 37-20.

Michigan Tech shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the field and made five three-pointers in the second half.

The highlight of the game for LSSU was Marshall's three-pointer with 3:11 remaining in the first half. It was her 54th three-pointer of the 2009-10 season and broke LSSU's single-season school record. She was 2-for-4 from behind the arc for the game.
