Lakers knock off Chargers for first time since 2007

SAULT STE. MARIE - Senior guard Emily Joseph scored a season-high 27 points for the Lake Superior State women's basketball team, which beat Hillsdale 78-71 Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium for the program's first victory over the Chargers since January, 2007.

Joseph, who surpassed the 1,000-point scoring milestone when she scored her 12th point of the game, was 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. She also had five steals and three assists. Joseph has averaged 21 points per game during the Lakers' three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests.

Hillsdale (7-2 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) led 49-47 with 11:28 remaining in the game. Joseph answered at 11:13 and ignited a 9-0 Laker run. Sarah Cubr also had a field goal, Joseph made two free throws, and Nicole Marshall canned a three-pointer for a 56-47 LSSU lead.

Joseph made back-to-back three-pointers at 4:52 and 4:05 as LSSU (6-3 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) built a 70-55 command.

Marshall finished with 18 points (tying her season high) and six assists, and Ronlea Peterson totaled nine points and five assists. Maria Blazejewski totaled 13 points and five rebounds. Cubr filled in for injured reserve Alyssa Loney and starting center Cassy Schemberger and totaled a career-high nine points and four rebounds. Schemberger played on a sore ankle and was in foul trouble throughout the game.

LSSU shot 48.1 percent from the field, including 7-of-17 from three-point range, and made 21-of-22 free throws.

Chelsea Harrison totaled 16 points and six assists to lead Hillsdale. Laura Barczak had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Katie Bildner added 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Chargers shot 49.1 percent from the field, including 3-of-9 from three-point range, and out-rebounded LSSU, 33-26.

The Lakers play host to Saginaw Valley State at 3 p.m. on Dec. 18.
