Mid-second half run saves No. 9 Washburn
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Ninth-ranked Washburn answered Lake Superior State senior Nicole Marshall's scoring surge with a 12-2 run midway through the second half of Saturday's non-conference women's basketball game. The Lady Blues went on to beat LSSU 65-51 at the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic.
LSSU senior Emily Joseph drained a three-pointer at 15:07 of the second half to tie the game, 32-32. Marshall then reeled off seven points to give LSSU a 40-38 lead with 11:45 remaining. Washburn (4-0) built a 50-42 lead with 8:29 to go. The Lady Blues extended their lead to 54-44 with 6:49 left.
Joseph led the Lakers with 15 points, three assists and three steals, while Maria Blazejewski finished with 13 points. Marshall and Cassy Schemberger scored nine points each. Schemberger also totaled a team-high nine rebounds.
LSSU was 18-of-43 from the field for 42 percent, including 6-of-17 from three-point range. The Lakers made 9-of-16 free throws.
Cassie Lombardino led Washburn with 17 points and eight rebounds. Laura Kinderknecht finished with 15 points. Washburn was 24-of-50 from the field for 48 percent, including 7-of-21 from behind the arc. Washburn made 10-of-12 free throws and out-rebounded LSSU, 32-24.
LSSU, which finished 0-2 at the GCU Classic, plays its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Saginaw Valley State.
