Sixteen LSSU winter sport student-athletes receive GLIAC All-Academic recognition

SAULT STE. MARIE – Sixteen Lake Superior State athletes representing the indoor track and field, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams, received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic recognition, and half earned GLIAC Academic Excellence Awards.

Seniors Kayla Nowak (Alpena, Mich.) and Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.), junior Ben Charbonneau (Sudbury, Ont.) and sophomore Alex Feravich (Cedar Springs, Mich.), who are members of the LSSU track and field team, received Academic Excellence Awards. Senior Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.), juniors Sarah Cubr (Riverview, Mich.) and Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.), and sophomore Maria Blazejewski (Beaulah, Mich.) of the LSSU women’s basketball team also earned Academic Excellence Awards.

Pieczynski, a fifth-year senior, owns the highest GPA among winter sport athletes. She is an exercise science major with a 3.884. Nowak, an athletic training major and this year’s Kiwanis Academic Excellence Award winner at LSSU, is second at 3.873. Blazejewski, who is also an exercise science major, is third at 3.728.

GLIAC All-Academic honors go to athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.499. LSSU athletes receiving awards were: (track and field) seniors Jake Hoover (Capac, Mich.), Luke Pease (Bellevue, Mich.), John Preczewski (Roscommon, Mich.) and Kimberlee Booms (Harrison, Mich.), junior Mike McPherson (Ironwood, Mich.) and sophomore Hans Riedel (Eau Claire, Wis.); (basketball) senior Ronlea Peterson (Midland, Mich.) and sophomore Derek Kinney (Romulus, Mich.).
