GVSU overpowers LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE - Grand Valley State held onto the No. 3 spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division women's basketball standings by beating Lake Superior State 74-53 Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

GVSU (7-7 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) held LSSU (5-8 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) to eight second-half field goals while shooting 54.9 percent from the field for the game. LSSU trimmed a 15-point deficit to three points, 36-33, early in the second half, but Grand Valley's Briauna Taylor hit a three-pointer at 17:37 to spark a 12-4 GVSU run.

LSSU senior center Cassy Schemberger left the game midway through the second half due to an ankle injury, and GVSU went on to build a 19-point cushion with seven minutes to go.

Taylor led GVSU with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kellie Watson added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Grand Valley was 28-of-51 from the field, including 8-of-21 from behind the arc, and made 10-of-15 free throws. GVSU dominated the boards, 45-32.

Maria Blazejewski scored 13 points and Taylor Greene added 10 to lead LSSU. The Lakers were 18-of-60 from the field for 30 percent. They made 5-of-20 three-point attempts and 12-of-19 free throws.

LSSU plays host to Michigan Tech at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
