Lakers bounce back with home exhibition victory over Laurentian

SAULT STE. MARIE - Three days after contending with Big Ten champion Michigan State, Lake Superior State regrouped and defeated Laurentian 74-54 during an exhibition women's basketball game Sunday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Senior center Cassy Schemberger totaled 14 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to lead the Lakers, who officially open their season Nov. 11 against former conference foe Mercyhurst. Sophomore guard Raven Trammell made six-of-eight three-point attempts and scored a game-leading 18 points. She also had four assists.

Also scoring in double figures for LSSU were junior forward Maria Blazejewski with 14 points and freshman forward Kandace Crittendon with 11. Crittendon was 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Blazejewski added seven rebounds and four assists.

LSSU shot 44.8 percent from the field while making 13-of-27 three-point attempts. The Lakers settled down to shoot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field during the second half. The led 34-18 at halftime despite making only 12-of-32 attempts (37.5 percent).

Amanda McDonald, Emma Decloe and Mary Scott scored 10 points each to lead Laurentian (2-6). The Voyageurs shot 31.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-14 from behind the arc.

LSSU out-rebounded Laurentian, 46-28.

Lake Superior State's season opener is part of the Timberwolf Classic at Northwood. LSSU also plays Illinois-Springfield on Nov. 12.
