Blazejewski hits 1,000 point career scoring milestone
SAULT STE. MARIE - Ohio Dominican didn't have an answer for Lake Superior State junior forward Maria Blazejewski and senior center Cassy Schemberger Thursday at Bud Cooper Gym.
Blazejewski was 10-of-16 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free-throw line as she scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Lakers to a 67-61 women's basketball victory over Ohio Dominican. She tied her single-game career high and surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring milestone.
Blazejewski scored 16 points during the second half, which Lake Superior State dominated, 42-28. She also contributed five assists and five rebounds.
With the win, the Lakers (6-12 overall, 2-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) snapped a six-game losing skid.
Schemberger finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, and senior forward Sarah Cubr added 11 points.
LSSU, which trailed 33-25 at halftime, came back to tie it, 37-37 with 14:26 remaining in the second half as the Blazejewski-Schemberger-Cubr trio went on a 10-0 run. The Lakers put the game away during the final minute on a layup by Blazejewski, a Schemberger free throw, and a 4-of-4 game-closing free-throw performance by Raven Trammell.
Lake Superior State held the Panthers to two second-half three-pointers after giving up six during the first half.
LSSU shot 41.8 percent from the field, including 6-of-20 from three-point range, and made 15-of-23 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded ODU, 38-31.
Kacee Hockenberry scored 18 points and Meredith Fox added 15 to lead Ohio Dominican, which shot 41.2 percent from the field, including 8-of-23 from three-point range. The Panthers made 11-of-14 free throws.
Lake Superior State plays host to Tiffin at 1 p.m. Saturday during Laker Basketball Alumni Weekend.
