Lakers' inside game comes up big at UM-Dearborn

DEARBORN - Senior center Cassy Schemberger, who was among the conference leaders in rebounding and field-goal percentage last season, enjoyed a breakout game Sunday by contributing 17 points and nine rebounds during Lake Superior State's 73-52 non-conference women's basketball victory at Michigan-Dearborn.

Schemberger went into the weekend, which included Saturday's three-point loss at Wayne State, averaging six points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her previous season scoring high was nine points.

LSSU's post game dominated as junior forward Maria Blazejewski led the Lakers (3-2) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Blazejewski and Schemberger combined to make 13-of-22 field-goal attempts and 10-of-14 free throws.

Guard Raven Trammell added 10 points coming off the bench. Guard Jasmine Brown and center Candice LaCross also came off the bench and scored eight points each.

Trammell and Blazejewski combined to total 12 of LSSU's 19 assists.

LSSU shot 47.2 percent from the field, making 5-of-16 three-point attempts and 18-of-25 free throws. The Lakers were 15-of-29 from the field for 51.7 percent during the second half, which they dominated 44-19.

Ashley Fauseneaucht scored 19 points and Jalissa Williams added 14 to lead Michigan-Dearborn (0-7). UM-D shot 39.6 percent from the field, going 6-for-23 from three-point range and 4-of-8 at the free-throw line.

LSSU out-rebounded UM-D, 41-25.

The Lakers play St. Joseph's (Ind.) at 1 p.m. on Nov. 26 during a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament at Ashland.
