Lakers take on Big Ten champs in exhibition opener
EAST LANSING - Defending Big Ten champion Michigan State gave a young Lake Superior State women's basketball team what is arguably the toughest season-opening test possible and won Thursday's exhibition game at the Breslin Center, 94-31.
Sophomore guard Raven Trammell scored eight points, and senior Sarah Cubr, junior Maria Blazejewski and freshman Taylor Greene added five each for the Lakers, who shot 23.1 percent from the field and committed 37 turnovers. Senior center Cassy Schemberger totaled 11 rebounds.
Taylor Alton led MSU with 13 points and six rebounds. Analise Pickrel followed with 12 points and three rebounds. The Spartans shot 42.7 percent from the field and out-rebounded LSSU, 54-41. MSU is picked to finish third in the Big Ten in this year's pre-season poll.
The Lakers play host to Canadian opponent Laurentian at 6 p.m. Sunday in an exhibition game at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
