Laker women enjoy a hot shooting night at NMU
MARQUETTE - Lake Superior State has won four of its last five women's basketball games after beating Northern Michigan 74-69 Thursday in Marquette.
The Lakers (9-13 overall, 5-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) avenged a 19-point loss to the Wildcats dating back to Jan. 14. It is their second straight game in which they turned the tables on a team that beat them at home earlier in the season.
Senior forward Sarah Cubr scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Lakers. She was 7-of-9 from the field, including 6-of-7 from three-point range. It was Cubr's eighth double-figure scoring performance of the season, and fourth in five games.
LSSU's Raven Trammell and Jasmine Brown were a combined 4-of-6 from behind the arc as the Lakers finished 10-of-15 as a team.
Lake Superior State shot 51 percent from the field (25-of-49), which is its second-best percentage of the season and best outing on the road.
Maria Blazejewski added 21 points and six rebounds, and Brown finished with 14 points. Cassy Schemberger totaled four points and a team-leading eight reebounds. Trammell contributed nine points, five rebounds and five assists.
LSSU extended a 34-23 halftime lead to 25 points with 13:18 remaining in the second half. NMU (10-12 overall, 6-9 GLIAC) cut the lead to four points, 65-61, with 2:18 to go. Trammell's three-pointer at 1:11 ended the Wildcats' run.
Lake Superior State plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Tech.
