Four hit double figures against Oakland City

ASHLAND, Ohio - Lake Superior State defeated Oakland City 66-54 Sunday during the second round of the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Ashland University, and the Lakers will take a 4-3 record into Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Saginaw Valley State.

Junior forward Maria Blazejewski totaled 20 points and six assists to lead four Lakers in double figures in scoring. Senior center Cassy Schemberger added 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double double. Senior forward Sarah Cubr and senior guard Jasmine Brown scored 10 points each.

LSSU led 36-28 at halftime after building its largest lead of the game, 14 points, with 8:07 to go. Oakland City (0-5) closed within nine points, 60-51, with 5:57 remaining in the game, but never got any closer.

The Lakers shot 38.6 percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from three-point range, and made 15-of-21 free throws. They out-rebounded Oakland City, 47-38. Jane Barclay totaled 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Oakland City, who shot 32.3 percent from the field, including 7-of-24 from behind the arc, and was 5-of-6 at the free-throw line.

Schemberger averaged 15.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for the weekend, while Blazejewski averaged 18.0 points and 5.5 assists per contest.
