Women's golf team opens season at Tom Kirinovic Classic

BIG RAPIDS - The Lake Superior State women's golf team opened the 2010-11 season with a 12th-place finish at the 14-team Tom Kirinovic Classic hosted by Ferris State.

LSSU's medalist was Samantha Gubbins with an 83-87--170. She tied for 51st, while teammate Amanda Garcia tied for 53rd with a 90-82--172. Dayna Drewes (90-88--178) was 62nd, followed by Meredith Cleary (103-92--195), who was 78th. Louise Hunt (99-108--207) was 82nd.

Holly Daniel (103-101--204) tied for 80th, but was not part of the team scoring.

Ashland shot a team score of 603 to win the team title and finish five strokes ahead of Grand Valley State and California-Pa. GVSU's Sarah Hoffman was the individual medalist with a 73-72--145.

The Lakers play host to the LSSU Inivitational on Saturday and Sunday at The Oaks at Kincheloe.
