Softball team goes to another tie-breaker

ORLANDO, Fla. - Lake Superior State lost 4-1 to 14th-ranked Lewis and had another game go to the international tie-breaker. The Lakers fell 5-4 to Sciences of Philadelphia in eight innings Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games.

Nicole Carstensen and Samantha Klinkner both had a double and a single, and Rachel Hall added to singles to lead the Lakers (3-9) against Lewis. Nichole Dunford and Lorrie Chaperon added one hit each.

Nikki Christensen pitched a seven-hitter with four walks and one strikeout.

Sciences of Philadelphia scored the winning run on a bunt single, followed by a base hit. LSSU left the tying run stranded on third base in the top of the eighth and fell to 1-2 in games decided in extra innings.

Dunford and Hall were 2-for-4, and Lacey Knoop, Amber Kern, Chaperon and Helena Zandarski added one hit each in that game. One of Dunford's hits was a game-tying two-run double in the seventh inning.

Jillian Willette scattered 12 hits, struck out one and walked one for LSSU.

The Lakers have Thursday off and resume play Friday against Clarion and Quincy.
