Lakers pick up two wins at GVSU

ALLENDALE - Two seventh-inning rallies lifted the Lake Superior State softball team to 6-5 and 3-2 victories over Grand Valley State and Cornerstone during Week 3 of the Lakers' fall season.

LSSU (7-4-1) scored two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to come back from a 4-3 deficit against GVSU. With the game tied 5-5, Laker Lacey Knoop led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second on a hit by Lorrie Chaperon. Pinch hitter Chevi Peralta-Everts ripped a hit off the GVSU third baseman's foot to load the bases. Knoop scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Helena Zandarski.

Nicole Carstensen was 4-for-4 as LSSU totaled 14 hits in the game. Samantha Klinkner was 2-for-3 with a double, and Chaperon was 2-for-4. Nikki Christensen was the winning pitcher. She was briefly relieved by Jill Willette in the fifth.

Nicole Dunford slammed two-run line-drive single in the seventh inning against Cornerstone. Rachel Hall and Klinkner led LSSU's offense with two hits each.

Willette started the game and totaled six strikeouts through five innings. Christensen struck out four during the final two innings.

"During the first week of the fall season we couldn't hold a lead against Hillsdale or Saginaw Valley," LSSU coach Don Myers said. "Then we started playing a little better. Last weekend was a good weekend, and this weekend was even better."

LSSU plays its annual alumni game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, and takes on the Laker hockey team at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, at Kaunisto Field.
