Lakers finish 3-4 during first fall weekend
MIDLAND - Lake Superior State enjoyed a big weekend at the plate, batting .390 as a team, and posted a 3-4 record during its first weekend of fall softball.
The Lakers were 2-1 while playing Saturday at Northview High School in Grand Rapids. They opened with a 5-3 loss to Aquinas, then beat Mott Community College, 10-2, and Muskegon Community College, 16-4.
Nikki Christensen was 3-for-3 and Helena Zandarski was 2-for-2 to lead LSSU against Aquinas. Zandarski followed with a 3-for-3 performance against Mott, and Lorrie Chaperon, Chelsea Maynard, Christensen, Nicole Dunford, Rachel Hall and Nicole Carstensen added two hits each. Chaperon homered in the second inning, and Christensen added a home run in the fourth.
Carstensen, Samantha Klinkner and Christensen were 3-for-5, and Chevi Peralta-Everts was 1-for-1 against Muskegon.
The Lakers finished 1-3 on Sunday at Northwood University, beating Mott, 11-3, and losing to Lansing Community College, 10-5, Saginaw Valley State, 10-3, and Hillsdale, 5-4.
Christensen was 4-for-4 with a triple and a double, and Hall and Klinkner had two hits each against Mott.
LSSU led 4-3 through 5 1/2 innings against LCC, which rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hall, Dunford and Christensen had two hits each to lead the Lakers.
SVSU limited the Lakers to four hits, but one of them was a home run by Peralta-Everts. Hillsdale scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull out a one-run victory. Hall was 2-for-4 and scored three runs against the Chargers. Dunford was 3-for-4, and Klinkner contributed a solo home run.
The Lakers continue their fall season on Sunday at Grand Valley State.
