Lakers go 2-0-1 at GVSU
ALLENDALE - Lake Superior State tied Grand Valley State, 2-2, and defeated Grand Rapids Community College, 9-1, and Davenport, 6-0, during the second weekend of its non-traditional fall softball season.
The Lakers played three 90-minute games at GVSU on Sunday and committed only one defensive error for the day. They return to Allendale for two more games on Oct. 4
Nikki Christensen pitched the first four innings, and Jill Willette tossed the final two of the Lakers' opening game against GVSU, which was stopped due to the time limit. Nicole Dunford was 3-for-4 and was credited with both RBIs against Grand Valley State. She hit a two-run double in the sixth inning that scored Nicole Carstensen and Rachel Hall. Carstensen had LSSU's only other hit in the game.
Willette, a freshman, started on the mound against GRCC and pitched to all but one batter. Fellow rookie Samantha Klinkner was 2-for-2 at the plate, including a first-inning grand slam. Chelsea Maynard was 2-for-3.
LSSU totaled 13 hits and Christensen pitched a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts against Davenport. Carstensen, Hall and Christensen were 2-for-4 at the plate, while Dunford was 3-for-4.
