Sixth-ranked Bulldogs move into GLIAC lead
BIG RAPIDS - Sixth-ranked Ferris State moved into a first-place tie with Saginaw Valley State after beating Lake Superior State 8-0 and 9-1 during a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball double-header Wednesday.
The Bulldogs improved to 32-6 overall and 18-4 in the GLIAC. They out-hit LSSU 9-1 in the opener and 13-4 in Game 2.
Nicole Carstensen was 3-for-3 and scored a run on Lorrie Chaperon's RBI single to lead Lake Superior State (6-39 overall, 0-22 GLIAC) in the second game. Nichole Dunford had LSSU's only hit during Game 1.
LSSU pitcher Nikki Christensen went the distance in the first game, totaling three strikeouts and three walks. She also had one strikeout and allowed five hits during the final three innings of the nightcap. Game 2 starter Jillian Willette allowed four runs on eight hits, one walk and one strikeout.
LSSU plays its first and only homestand of the season this weekend at Kaunisto Field. The Lakers take on Ashland on Saturday and Tiffin on Sunday. Both twinbills begin at 1 p.m.
