Laker softball team takes on seventh-ranked Ferris State
BIG RAPIDS - Lake Superior State pitchers Nikki Christensen and Jillian Willette kept earned runs to a minimum against seventh-ranked Ferris State, which is the top-rated team in the Great Lakes Region.
Ferris State (19-3 overall, 5-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) swept LSSU, 6-3 and 7-2, Saturday at FSU Field. Christensen went the distance in the first game and allowed only four earned runs. She totaled three walks and three strikeouts, and gave up 12 hits.
Christensen also went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead LSSU hitters. Lacey Knoop, Lorrie Chaperon, Nichole Dunford, Helena Zandarski and Chelsea Maynard added one hit each. Chaperon's hit was her fifth double of the season.
Willette started the nightcap and came out of the game in the fifth inning as the Bulldogs built a 6-0 lead. She also allowed four earned runs on eight hits, two walks and one strikeout. Christensen finished the contest, allowing one unearned run on two hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Knoop, Chaperon, Dunford, Amber Kern, Zandarski and Chevie Peralta-Everts had one hit each for the Lakers (6-25 overall, 0-8 GLIAC).
Knoop is batting .374 to lead LSSU this season.
The Lakers play a GLIAC twinbill at Grand Valley State beginning at noon Sunday.
