Lakers take to the road again
MIDLAND - The Lake Superior State softball team hit the road for the second time this week and played a single Easter weekend twinbill at Northwood on Friday.
NU defeated LSSU 10-4 and 4-0 to improve to 12-18 overall and 6-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. LSSU fell to 6-31 overall and 0-14 in league play.
Lorrie Chaperon and Rachel Hall were both 2-for-4, and Chevie Peralta-Everts, Helena Zandarski and Nikki Christensen had one hit each in Game 1 for the Lakers. One of Chaperon's hits was a two-run double in the fifth inning, during which LSSU scored four runs to cut NU's lead to 5-4. The Timberwolves scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Christensen suffered the loss, giving up nine runs on eight hits, six strikeouts and four walks. Seven runs were earned. Jillian Willette relieved Christensen in the seventh inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk.
Northwood out-hit LSSU 8-3 in Game 2. The Timberwolves scored one run in the first inning and three in the third off Willette, who pitched the first three innings. Christensen shut out NU the rest of the way, allowing only two hits on no walks and no strikeouts.
Hall, Nichole Dunford and Christensen had one hit each for Lake Superior State.
LSSU plays a make-up double-header at Wayne State on April 17.
